Vedic Culture and Tradition- The Essence of India

Time has changed in leaps and bounds. Education has unfurled itself in the fields of science and technology. Aspects of education have changed many folds.

Present day education system emphasizes up making a student literate. This way a child would be able to fulfill her/his employment needs. While in Vedic times, pupils were educated to stand firm in all walks of life. This has raised a question on the difference between literacy and education. Now a days, educational institutions run after making a child literate. As far as I believe, literacy is to make someone knowledgeable about the word usage; whereas, education is the implementation of that knowledge to make our life worth living. This expression has disappeared in current teaching.

The relevance of Vedic ideals in the field of modern education is inevitable. Vedic education has augmented the uniqueness of Indian culture on the world stage. The Vedas and the other religious books has been the guiding torch to teach the human race ideals of truth, confidence, religiousness, social efficiency and welfare. So, the need of Vedas to maintain the discipline in the modern educational institutes and to create cordial relation between teacher and student is ardently required. Vedic aspect of education has to be worked upon to make a pupil independent, moralistic, pious and philanthropist. Some such aspects include-

  • Moral education- The concept of moral science as a compulsory subject till middle school has disappeared. Its revival should be the priority for all the educationists.  The animal instinct of this social animal, i.e. human being, is at a high. So as to do away with it, pupils should be made to respect their elders, help the needy and be humane to other creatures.
  • Discipline- Teaching-learning process should be a salient feature.

Neither teacher should accept indiscipline of any kind nor should students be given the freedom to overlook a teacher’s teaching. A fine line between a teacher and his pupil, which has vanished, should be maintained for an ideal relationship.

Other aspects like curriculum, life of a student, their character, understanding and diverse needs have to be kept in mind so as to provide students absolute benefit from Vedic education system. During the Vedic age women education was at its peak; no distinction was made between the girls and the boys. This aspect should be bought back.

Being an educator, I would try to inculcate in my pupils these Vedic aspects through my teachings and make their life worthy in terms of knowledge and character.   In order to make a student’s life healthy and smooth he should be made to realize the importance of vedic education which is totally moral education and I think moral education is enough for the success of every individual. The regular conduction of rituals like hawans and prayers can retain the spark of morality alive. I experienced the influence of this feature in my tenure in one of the public schools, which is worth mentioning.

Dr. Radhakrishnan has rightly said that: ―A civilization is not built of bricks, steel and machinery, it is built with men, their quality and character. So the true aim of education is to develop in the body and in soul all the beauty and all perfection of which they are capable. The Vedic system of education was aimed at molding the young pupils into individuals capable of living a perfect and full life.  The Vedas urge upon men to assemble on a common platform, to think together, and to work together for achieving a common goal.
